Daniel Day Lewis Pays Tribute to Heath Ledger

By Celebrity Gossip • on January 30, 2008

Daniel Day-Lewis paid an emotional tribute to Heath Ledger during a taped appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. I tell ya what folks, the Anna Nicole Smith death did nothing to me, John Ritter was sad, Johnny Cash was a little tough too. But the Heath Ledger death has really bummed me out the past week and the way that all these shitty tabloid tv shows are riding the shit wave for sensationalized ratings, makes me hate being a blogger. Heath, like Daniel Day Lewis had unbelievable talent. Both their performances in movies make you feel something, makes you want to DO something, cause a reaction in your life which may better mankind. A way to look into your own soul. Normally these tributes that come out are from hacks, has-beens, or wanna-bes, that want to ride the PR magic carpet ride. Later on the people close to the deceased, or so they say,  come out with a tell-all book and do the tv circuit. Then there is the annoying interviews from a Larry King, where they miss the whole point right from the get-go, and work a non-relevant angle on the story. I know the Oprah show is a giant soap-box, and maybe Daniel Day is “campaigning for his upcoming Oscar nomination” (I would puke). But my heart says that Heath was and always will be beloved and respected. He was true to his craft. When I heard Heath got the Joker role…..I went nuts! Being a Christian Bale fan (not his last few flicks), and the dark dark style of a Heath Ledger, I will say that this upcoming Batman movie could be the best one yet. When I see the pictures of him with the smeared makeup…..it hits you right in the gut.  Heath had the midas touch, even garbage turned to gold when he touched it. So in closing, write angry letters to the tabloid shows which exploit Heath’s memory and let Mr. Ledger’s parents have some peace.

“I feel very unsettled at the moment, and I suppose it’s `cause I only just saw the news about Heath Ledger’s death,” said Day-Lewis, his voice quivering.

“It seems somehow strange to be talking about anything else. Not that there’s anything to say really except to express one’s regret and to say from the bottom of one’s heart to his family and to his friends that I’m sorry for their trouble,” he said.

The real difference here is that Anna Nicole was a death that we all could have seen coming. She had a bunch of leeches and enablers around her that kept her basically sedated and so when the news broke it was less traumatic than hearing about a talented young man like Heath. He was a fine actor and did not have any outward signs as to being a drinker or a drug user or really possessing any deadly vices. He did not have a posse full of gold diggers around himself or any of that. Heath’s death was as big of a shock as it could be but for the most part the media has done a good job of being respectful (which cannot be said for how Anna’s death was handled).

Anna’s death wasn’t especially sad or tragic (or unexected, for that matter) bc she transformed herself (admittedly with help from her greedy sidekicks) into a pathetic trainwreck/ spectacle. In Ledger’s case, it was sad and tragic and entirely unexpected bc he was a private and decent guy.

In a touching moment at the otherwise carefree Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon, actress Cate Blanchett took a second to honor her friend and co-star Heath Ledger, who passed away Jan. 22 from an accidental overdose of several prescription medications.Accepting her award for Best Supporting Actress for the film I’m Not There, which also starred Heath, Cate ended her list of “thank you’s” by honoring her fellow Australian actor, calling him “one the most beautiful, independent spirits of all” before dedicating the award to him. On the day of Heath’s Feb. 9 funeral, Cate gave a moving and loving tribute to Heath when she read a eulogy at a memorial service for the late actor in his hometown of Perth, Australia. Blanchett is also nominated in the same category for her I’m Not There role at tomorrow night’s Oscars.
