Richard Gere Arrested In India
Lawyers and legal experts in India reacted angrily Friday after a court issued arrest warrants for Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, media reports said.
Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants Thursday in the northwestern city of Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection offended local sensibilities.On Friday, India’s former attorney general Soli Sorabjee told the Times of India newspaper that “the order is unsustainable and makes us look ridiculous.”
“Magistrates should not act like Taliban moral police,” Sorabjee added. Another senior lawyer called the order “an act of judicial indecency.”"This is only for cheap publicity and the magistrate and lawyer should be restrained,” Dushyant Dave told the newspaper.
Gere left India shortly after the kissing incident and it was not immediately clear how the warrant would affect him. His publicist, Alan Nierob, said there would be no comment from the actor.He is a frequent visitor to India, promoting health issues and the cause of Tibetan exiles. The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has his headquarters in the northern Indian town of Dharmsala.
Under Indian law, a person convicted of public obscenity faces up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.Last week, crowds in several Indian cities burned effigies of the 57-year-old star of “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “American Gigolo” and “Pretty Woman” after he embraced Shetty and kissed her several times on her cheeks during an HIV/AIDS awareness event in the Indian capital.Photographs were splashed across front pages in India, where public displays of affection are largely taboo.
The judge lambasted Shetty for not resisting Gere’s kisses and ordered her to appear in his court May 5, Press Trust of India news agency said.Shetty, who is currently on a religious pilgrimage in southern India, was upset by the news, said her spokesman, Dale Bhagwagar.
“Shilpa wishes that people would focus on the real issue, AIDS awareness, and not three pecks on her cheek,” Bhagwagar told The Associated Press, adding that she had not yet received any court summons.
Shetty, already well known in India, became an international star after her appearance on the British reality show “Celebrity Big Brother.” A fellow contestant, Jade Goody, sparked international headlines by allegedly making racist comments to Shetty. Mobs took to the streets of India to denounce Goody, and Shetty went on to win the competition.

Why are people in India so afraid of kissing? Maybe if they started showing their own loved ones a little harmless public display of affection now and then they wouldn’t be so fearful of other people doing it. I think Richard Gere should stand up for his kissing rights. Shetty didn’t seem to mind. Kisses on the cheeks are far from sexual. They were both wearing clothes! It was obviously just a publicity stunt that in any other country would’ve been taken lighly. Welcome to the modern world India. How often do you see a public official go to another country with out first researching local customs and ediquite, any time a public figure goes, to another country, the same for then is expected, Richard Gere is no exception, while his heart was in the right place to help wiht India’s cause to help with AIDS awareness, he should at the same time should have considered Indias, ediquite and rules. Hey buddy An_Indian_living_in_EU, I am also from India and live in the US, I really feel more comfortable living in the States in terms of culture and freedom. You are right, indian system is a rotten one, and for whatever they do wrong they say “it’s our culture”. I would never go back to india to live. I just go there every year and see my parents, and come back here. Here immigration process is so not so easy orelse I would bring my parents here, and forget india for always. There is no freedom in india! Also my wife, who is indian, says the same. We would go to Europe in later years and live in Swiss perhaps. Where in the EU do you live?
I expect things would change in India one day. I really feel like killing those police and judges you just mentioned. You are correct about them!
