Two Black Coaches In Superbowl
With two black coaches in the Super Bowl for the first time, the historic accomplishment presents a dilemma for many black fans: Whom to root for?
As with other ethnic groups, the common denominator of racial pride creates an instant following for black coaches and athletes _ allegiances to hometowns or other team ties aside. For example, Tiger Woods or Venus and Serena Williams are commonly cheered on by blacks, even those who may have never before watched a round of golf or set of tennis.
Many black fans are not picking sides, as they see Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy and Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith’s presence in the NFL’s biggest game as a win-win.
“We can’t lose,” said New York University history professor Jeffrey Sammons, who studies sports and race.
“They become representative. They become iconic. Particularly in sports, if given the opportunity, we can achieve in places where people say we can’t or aren’t expected to,” Sammons said.
Since black coaches led two of the four teams that reached the NFL’s conference title games, the odds were good that one would make history and become the first black coach in the Super Bowl _ and black fans without team allegiances were preparing to root for either Dungy or Smith over a white rival.
But with Dungy and Smith now set to stand opposite one another in the NFL’s championship game Feb. 4, many black fans are determining whom to pull for in the Super Bowl on even more trivial criteria _ from what they think of a team’s home city to the race of a coach’s wife. (Dungy - black wife / Lovie - whitey wife)
Lovie is obviously blacker, and will win the ghetto vote. But Dungy has white-like features which gives him the lightskinned blacks, latinos, and whitebread crackers. His features are definately Colonpowellesc, therefore more trustworthy and less violent.
So what’s Star Muscle’s Superbowl Prediction:
Colts will win over the Bears 29-17. People will lose their house and children’s college education on this game.
