Oprah Winfrey Opening School In South Africa

By Celebrity Gossip • on January 9, 2007

oprah

Oprah Winfrey recently explained why she’s opening a school in South Africa instead of using US$40 million on America’s needy youth. “I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools [in the US],” she told Newsweek. “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.” But uniforms are not all those girls are going to get, Winfrey reportedly added a yoga studio and beauty salon. “These girls deserve to be surrounded by beauty, and beauty does inspire,” she said. Also, the talk show host made sure the school’s dorm rooms were built with large closets. “People asked me why it was important to have closet space, and it’s because they will have something,” she explained. “We plan to give them a chance to earn money to buy things. That’s the only way to really teach them how to appreciate things.”

Alot of people are criticizing Oprah and her wonderful gift. People think she should have done it in the US, she should’ve done it for more girls, and so on and so on. It’s Oprah’s money and when you people have 40 million dollars and want to give it to some form of charity, then YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT.

Oprah is a beautiful person to do this and deserves our respect, not criticism.

Oprah is giving back, however, her explanation as to why not US poor. Let’s face it, the US and SA are like apples and oranges. Granted Ms. Winfrey used her own money, but I know there are young ladies throughout the US whose parents or parent are working 1,2,3 jobs, just to maintain; oh, how they would have loved an opportunity this. I think Oprah put all of the US girls in the same pot. No disrespect to Oprah just thought I should give some love to some of American’s future leaders, trying everday to overcome all sorts of obstacles and still they rise, as Miles Corwin wrote about in his book “And Still We Rise”. Believe me it’s all good, but let’s have some faith America’s youth.

Let me first make a statement that people helping people is always a good thing and very rewarding for yourself. I still question if you need to spend $40m on 150 kids. The important thing is to provide a quality education for kids who are willing to learn and who cannot afford it.

By diyanah on February 3rd, 2007 at 8:47 am

i think the girls deserve some bloody money and they better promote world peace in the future or all that money will go down the drain.but i’m still not sure about the beauty salon, though.

i can’t wait for oprah’s man crushing, estrogen loving goddesses to come of age and put another nail into the the dominant male paradigm.

that is of course unless michael jordan can answer the call and set up a similar school in south africa for boys.

By Beverly Rowan on February 14th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

i think Oprah did a wonderful job in S. Africa. but i think she could do something for other people too.
she gives out things to people who go to her show and listen to people who have the time to call her and write her. it would be even more awesome if she gave the kids who are already in school a chance. and listen to their stories.

By Pandora Tucker on February 19th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Keep up the good work Oprah! I would love to be apart of this new endeaver. I am a young retired teacher who would love to share some of my expertise with these youth. Continue being a drum major for justice.

After watching the show I must say I was impressed with how educated the girls were and articulate. I fell in love with all of them. My husband didn’t want to watch but after it was over he said”i’m really impressed!” It almost makes you ashamed of how the American kids act, they hate school and are so unappreciated of their possessions. It was really inspiring and well worth the money you spent. I think you are such a giver, and you are my hero. Thanks!

By Catherine on March 4th, 2007 at 6:06 am

My name is Catherine Peck, I am from Greenville Miss. I live in Bellflower Ca your school you open in South Africa was so moving. Watching those little girls made my mind run back when I was a child. We were poor and I didn’t realize it until I went and visit other places and found out I was poor. I am the same age as you are. I am the fourth child in my family of 8. Watching my grandmother be pick up my a Doctor family she raise their children and took care of them. I remember watching as they pick her up only the Doctor or his wife would be in the car but they put her in the back of the car. Out of my sister and brothers I was the first to attend college , became a Medical Assistant married and had 5 beautiful children. Your story was so inspiring to me I cried and cried and prayed and ask God to watch over those children and take care of them. One song writer written a song, “If I can help somebody as I pass along–If I can encourage somebody with a word or song then my living will not be in vain. God has place you where you are today because he has an purpose for you life. He will do more greater things in your life if you yield him you whole life. I love you and may God forever be with you. Pls write me back

I had taped the special on Oprah’s opening her school for the cream of the crop - as in the best girls to succeed and become leaders. I just watched this special and was so moved and cried through most of the last 30 minutes.
My question is: Did the two sisters both get in? I’m sure they were probably shown, but I wasn’t sure. I just would really like to know because I will worry about this forever. As for Oprah knowing this is what she was put on this earth for - I truly believe this is true. Now, I am trying to figure out why I am here.

By Gaye on March 4th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

I watched the show about the opening of your school and I was so impressed. I could not help but think about how I would have felt if I had been one of those girls. It would have been nothing short of a dreamlike experience. It was very moving to see the gratitude of the girls and who so articulate and focused on succeeding they were, despite their challenges. What you did was wonderful and to the detracters I ask; what are you doing, to assist someone? It’s your money, go with your heart and do it your way! Yes it may seem like just breaking the tip of an iceberg but it only takes a spark to get a fire going. Each of us has an assignment in life and what is important is us knowing individually, what that is. People need to see this as planting a seed, starting with a small group of girls who will eventually have a huge impact on the lives of other girls in the years to come. One must look at the big picture. The entire program has changed my way of thinking in terms of being grateful for what I have and being more sensitive to the plight and needs of others. Kudos and well done! I believe you have certainly opened the eyes of these girls to see clearly that the sky is the limit in terms of what they can achieve in life and I am sure that they will inspire other girls.

I watched the whole program with tears streaming down my face. What incredible beautiful girls! What a wonderfui inspired gift! I am sure the future will show what an important idea this is. I can’t thank you enough.

Ophra - please include a several page update in every issue of O.

i know many athletes and entertainment stars have put some of their huge salaries to help kids or the community. I hope this makes more of them decide that there are many better uses than a stable of 10 cars and a huge estate.

And I also hope that the big-time CEO’s would join them.

I though that was a wonderful thing she for those girls because majority of this American kids dont know what they have. But people around the world especially in Africa they cherish education because they know if there is no education there is no life so people need to stop saying why she built it in Africa not the US plus is her money so get over it.

Opera, I am doing a magazine ariticle for school and you were my top choice to do a celiberty article on I think you are right even though I am a kid in the US. I think you are exactly right that kids today are very spoiled in America with their Louie Vitons, Dooney and Burke, and Chanel. We need to give the money to kids who can’t afford the education or nice things again Opera this is a very nice and charitab;e thing you’ve done again thank you.

I really think Operah did a good thing for those girls. It’s good that there getting an education to go further in life. It shows the girls they can do something with there life and be seccesful in what they want to do. it’s nice to know people are willing to help poor kids get an education and be willing to pay for it to be built from the ground up. it’s nice to see rich are willing to help the poor.

I think what Oprah did in Africa is great, and rest assure she will be blessed beyond measure because the bible says we will always have poor people and we are to help the poor.
I pray that Oprah will see my little e-mail because I was the first African American to build a FEC, Family Entertainment Center in Urbana Ohio in l996. I would love the opportunity to meet Oprah and build a FEC in Africa where the students can go on a week-end and have fun with family and friends.
The project would be comprised of a 36 hole Miniature Golf Course, Batting cage, Bumper Boats, Go-Karts, and a building with games and concession to be open year round.
I come from a family of 17 brothers and sisters from the same mother and father and mom has over 100 grandchildren.
You can e-mail me or call me at 734-223-9441.

I am a white South African and want to thank Oprah for being the beautiful person she is in giving these disavantaged girls an opportunity to better themselves and therefore help in healing a nation. Young girls in South Africa have the most difficult chance in getting ahead. They are being raped and deliberatly impregnated so that they are not able to continue with their studies, the worse part is that their Principal does not know wether it is the teachers or the students impregnating them. Oprah, once your well educated students have graduated, they will be able to teach the less fortunate. Your generousity will still be seen in years to come.
Reading some of the emails above, I am surprises at how shallow people can be, Oprah has given and continues to give so much to America why can’t you just be proud of her instead bad mouthin her.

By Marcus J PETER on June 13th, 2007 at 10:30 am

Hi Oprah

Congratulations on being able to see your venture of building your Leadership Academy For Girls in South Africa! Well done!!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen little snippets of the proceedings over here in the UK and unfortunately, because it was not aired over here I did not get to see the whole of te opening ceremony.

However, I would like to purchase the DVD for my collection and ofcourse to sit down and watch from start to finish.

Can you or someone from your staff kindly point me in the right direction to be able to purchase a copy as I cannot seem to find any links on google and the last time I checked your website I did not find a any link for this?

Do continue to ignore the nay-sayers, and the negative narrow minded people and may god continue to allow you to fulfill your purpose while on this planet, in a way that suits you.

KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT AND CONSIDERATE WORK THAT YOU DO SO SUPERBLY WELL AND HERE’S GO GOOD HEALTH LOADS OF BLESSINGS FROM ABOVE…………..

Peace/Much Love

Marcus

I truly respect what Oprah is doing both here in the U.S and South Africa. Being an educator myself and comming from a long list of educators, who have fought for the underdog for years, I understand the vast amounts of issues. We want to make great changes and spend endless hours giving,Yet no matter how much we try or give someone will complain. Before you juge the actions of someone else think about what you could do to help. I have and will be going to South Africa at the end of March. I hope to begin by first visting and listening to the voices of those who seem so distant. I hope to vist the school as I am a Black Montessor Educator (We are rare) in a school of upper class U.S students. They have been taught many principles of having a life long global existance, “No Man is an Island”. I hope to can get some tpye of student interactive exchange between both schools, set up fund raising and in general, gather information.

Congratulations Oprah on the opening of a state of the art school for special girls. I am a secondary school educator teaching for 25 years. My school has all the resources and I never once spared a thought for the educator who was teaching under trying circumstances, who did not have chairs, desks, chalkboard for their children. After the National Teachers Awards adjudication process (which I was a part of ), the experience was an eye opener. I began to feel guilty about how little I do for my children in comparison to those in the rural areas. The educators double up as parents, feeding scheme co-ordinators etc. for me the experience has made me richer. Therefore today when I look at the opportunity that you have given these girls I feel so proud of your “giving” nature. I salute you”. You will always be an inspiration to me and I look forward to meeting you some day, maybe even teach at your school. The gift that you have given will live on in their lives. Love Kamala

Oprah I only dream of doing what you have done for those children, I am South African and I had a great education and one day would like to give back to my country in helping all the children out there that did not have the same oportunity like me. I just need to work on a big project and find out where it is really needed, South Africa also has many children in need of money to go to school, my dream is to open up a school in each town close to all the ton ships to allow all these wonderful children to go to school and receive a good education. I just dont know how to go about doing so, I kind of thought that I could start off with a little day school, which I will get big companies to sponsor me a bus, books, clothes, food, etc… but I still dont know on how about doing so. I am 23 years old and would love to get some great advice from you. What you have done is awesome and I just wish that the rest of our country could work together and make all these wonderful dreams come true for these beautiful children. There is alot of probelms to solve so the question is where do we all start to contribute to our country.

I love my country and always will
Africa unite!!!
