Apocalypto” took the #1 spot at the box office in its first three days of release. The epic depicting one man’s struggle to survive the internal elements of collapse of the Mayan empire made an approximate $14.2 million its opening weekend, playing in nearly 2,500 theaters. The film knocked “Happy Feet” out of 1st place, and “The Holiday” took second right behind “Apocalypto” with $13.5 million. Hail Mel Gibson. I thought him keeping his name on the movie was a bad idea, but it looks like racism sells again. Or maybe this was the Christians trying to stick it to the Jews for what they did to Jesus in Mel’s ‘Passion of the Christ’ movie. Take that mutha f&ckers. All I can say that this movie does is re-enforces that controversy sells, and this is a sad, sad world.

Mel was on the Jay Leno show and Jay was a complete kiss ass. Mr. Leno asked no hard questions and the audience applaused him like he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. What a horrible interviewer Jay is, I was stunned at Mel’s flippy attitude over the whole experience.

Mel Getting Sued For Apocalypto ?
A Mexican filmmaker has accused Mel Gibson of stealing scenes for his new drama “Apocalypto” from a little-known 1989 movie.
Gibson’s epic, which is set in the Mayan civilization and told in an obscure Mayan language, opened with $14.2 million to claim the top spot in the U.S. box office over the weekend.
However, the movie’s success has been marred by claims from director Juan Catlett that Gibson copied key scenes from “Return to Aztlan” for the movie.
Catlett alleges Gibson’s production manager was given a copy of his movie — about the fall of an ancient Mexican empire — for just 100 pesos.
He says, “There are images very similar to those in my film.
“It seems my movie served as a consultancy and a reference — and they only paid me 100 pesos.”

I haven’t seen Apocalypto yet, but the European critics are saying its not a waste of time. What’s wrong with America? Love to lynch? Poor man, probably not allowed insomuch as to fart ever while alive!? Gibson, in my opinion, is a gifted director - I’m definitely buying a ticket for his new film.

It is apparently worse than just this lawsuit. Gibson’s alleged “co-writer” on Apocalypto (Farhad Safinia) allegedly stole almost the entire screenplay from an unknown screenwriter that had shopped his own script (called Sacrifice) around Hollywood. It was registered with the Writers Guild and he thought about bringing action but it was too risky, both financially and as a career move. You can put the earlier script and the final film side by side and it is spooky how close they are. Safinia’s only previous credit was as a production assistant. I’m told that people stealing stuff is common in Hollywood.
